What to Expect
Why is this film being made?
In 2022 & 2023, I lost my mother and grandmother respectively.
When experiencing this I came to a few conclusions:
NO ONE TEACHES US HOW TO DEAL WITH THIS.
THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO DEAL WITH GRIEF
GRIEVING CAN BE INCREDIBLY ISOLATING
After experiencing the process of grieving for myself, I feel called to channel my emotions and abilities into something meaningful —a documentary film about grief. Through this film, I hope to continue to heal, but also to connect others who are navigating journeys of loss. I am seeking to de-mystify the process of grief and explore the intimate nature of loss. Grief is a universal experience, and helping just one person tackle this difficult truth makes working on this project endlessly compelling.
A screen grab from the film featuring Mark Vapnar
This documentary project is a short film (Est. 40-60 Minutes) dedicated to de-mystifying the complex landscape of grief through a blend of relatable human storytelling, educational, and practical insight. While the project is born from a deep understanding of loss, its primary mission is to serve as a comprehensive resource for those navigating their own journeys of bereavement and for the communities that support them, while also being a catalyst to spark conversation and connection.
The film aims to transform the often-isolating experience of loss into a shared journey that not only educates but also validates.
Informing the Process: The film provides essential context on what it means to grieve, exploring the psychological and emotional nuances of the process to help viewers understand that their experiences—however intense—are a natural part of the human condition.
A Platform for Voices: By featuring stories from across Wisconsin and the Midwest, the documentary gives individuals the opportunity to speak openly about their grief, creating a tapestry of relatable narratives that encourage talking more about grief so that no one has to walk this path alone.
Equipping the Support System: One of my key goals is to give the "supporters"—friends, family, and colleagues— Perspective on how to provide meaningful, compassionate care to the people around them who may be in the process of grief. It is often hard to know what to say and how to show up for your loved ones and I seek to help people feel more comfortable approaching the subject.
Educational Framework: This film seeks to provide information designed to help viewers identify and normalize the various stages and manifestations of grief, through the lens of both people in the process of grief and professionals who deal with grief on a more regular basis. Creating a sort of "call and response" approach to informing the viewer on grief.
Relatable Storytelling: In creating high-fidelity interviews regarding grief. I hope to highlight the universality of loss while fostering a sense of community and shared understanding around the process. I believe that allowing people to speak about their grief and share memories and stories about their loved ones and their experiences will open the dialogue and allow grief to come into the light where it has a chance to cultivate connection.
